It has to do with Hitler and Stalin while that is not highlighted and a few other dictators since then.
What happened on February 24 2022 when Putin (really Putin using the Russians) invaded a souvenir nation, Ukraine that was European, was that Europeans were SHOCKED! The Europeans and parts of the rest of the world including the US and many US Citizens who had watched Putin become the absolute dictator he is today SAW the beginnings of WW II but this time “he” had nuclear weapons.
Note that Putin had invaded Afghanistan in 1979- 1989 and won nothing and then invaded Chechnya in 2000 and Georgia in 2008. There is devastation in both attacks and significant loss of civilian life as well. Both “countries” were part of the Soviet Union and neither presented a threat to the “west” European community. They were seen as local wars that were being allowed just as the US war in Iraq and Afghanistan was seen as the US response to 9-11. ( You now accept? that the official story of 9-11 is not what it is claimed to be so what is the meaning of those war?)
Then in 2011 both Putin and the US got involved in the Syrian Civil War of many sides and that goes on even today. All of these previous WARS were seen as local isolated power plays with little consequence. ( In hindsight each gave Putin more certainty that the WARS he entered were OK because even the US had invaded Iraq and Afghanistan and if the US did that then why couldn’t Putin do the same? All of those other WARS were incursion and were internal to Russia and are not considered to be part of Europe like the Ukraine has become. Yes, Ukraine had become European since in independence and had significant economic impacts on the region and even the world with its production of wheat.
So on February 24, 2022 when the Putin ordered the Russian troops across the border of the Ukraine, in the minds of many in the world and the vast majority of Europeans it was NO different from Hitler going into Poland in 1939 just 20 years after WW I ended in which human life was of little value. More importantly is that Putin has demonstrated over the past 20 years that he is really no different from Hitler in his indifference to human life. The Horror stories of what Putin did in those first internal wars was a stark reminder of what was to come and is now being realized with the absolute devastation of parts of the Ukraine.
At the end of 1945 one dictator was gone Hitler but the other dictator Stalin continued to internally deal with his problem as he saw fit. Many were arrested and over a million died or were killed. The rest of the world was ok with that because they each had their own internal issues (lynching and then the treatment of Black US military after the WW II in the US). It was convenient to blame Communism for those killed by Stalin. That the US and many others accepted Stalin’s behavior is yet another curse that we are living with today.
THE WORLD did not and has not addressed what to do when a crazy man who has the POWER to control a government that has the ability to kill its own or to attack other countries! That really was the question at the end of the WW II. How to stop the likes of the leader of any country that would wantonly massacre others as Putin is now doing in the Ukraine as the world watches using i-phones and drones. Just as the challenge in 1945 was how to stop Hitler how do we STOP Putin?
Putin made an interesting comment on the Finish joining NATO. He said that when he saw a Finish soldier he saw a friend (the Finish Have NEVER seen the Russians as friends) but when the Finish join NATO he will see an enemy. The Putin does not see his previous actions of constant WAR as a threatm is a part of the problem to say the least.
And so unless WE are ready for WW III this is the best we have and where history will be made one way or the other. Either Putin will use Nuclear weapons or he will come to some reality and accommodation that will be less to his liking than when it started on Feb 24, 2022. Putin claims that NATO is a threat to Russia which it is not. As NATO stands as an equal to Putin, Putin feels inadequate and that is unfortunate but it is the reality. It is Putin’s own actions that have placed him outside the World Community. (Just now it crossed my mind that Communism surely is not the issue since the Chinese “Communist” manufacture how much of our stuff?) Hence this why the US and the Europeans are doing what WE are.
