Dad's Wave

A hand arcing back and-forth

was never daddy’s wave

no

a circle was his perfect signature

i see him as the lake’s stone

ripples his hello

i see him as a high swirling pine

grabs my eye

i see him as i warmly kiss

my loves good-bye

yes

my father was my first earth-school teacher

but since he’s gone

every day my classroom’s sent

his wisdom oozing substitute

yes

every day a sunrise

smelling-salts my soul

and wind-whips blessings

round my feet

I pass Dad’s wave on into the world with memories of him each time I do.  I just ran across a related thought in Caroline Myss’s Invisble Acts of Power. “Why do some people jump … to help another person, while others look the other way?… I think something greater than compassion or good manners is at work. … I think it is the invisible power of grace, moving between the open hearts of the giver and the receiver. The action itself may be small. But the energy that is channeled through that action is the high-voltage current of grace. It contains the power to renew someone’s faith in (oneself)… .  It even has the power to save a life.”

To me, Dad’s wave is a reminder that our relationships are much deeper than merely back and forth exchanges. Dad’s wave is a mini sacrament of Grace. I invite you to experiment sharing Lyle Palmer’s signature wave with children of all ages!  Happy celebrating smiles as you add your punctuated wink or grin to help create personalized positive energy.
